No, it is not compulsory in all toilets. But it is recommended. According to the Technical Building Code (CTE), specifically the Basic Document on Safety of Use and Accessibility (DB SUA), it is compulsory in accessible toilets located in public areas.

The device must be located inside the accessible toilet and be easily accessible from different positions, including the floor in case of falls.

The system must:

  • Transmit an audible request for assistance from a control point.
  • Allow the user to verify that his call has been received.
  • Be perceptible from a location with frequent foot traffic.

A typical system includes:

  • An accessible operating mechanism within the toilet.
  • A visual and/or audible signal to alert staff or bystanders.
  • A device that allows the user to confirm that their call has been received.

A red pull cord with two cuffs, one at medium height and one close to the ground, is recommended for ease of use from different positions.

Yes, the signals must be perceptible considering the ambient noise level and the lighting conditions of the place where they are installed.

The implementation of these systems:

  • Improves the safety and independence of people with disabilities.
  • Provides peace of mind to users, carers and family members.
  • Contributes to creating more inclusive and respectful environments.

The building owner/manager is responsible for ensuring the correct operation and maintenance of the system.

Although not specified in the regulations, it is recommended that staff receive training on how to respond appropriately to calls for assistance and how to interact with people with different types of disabilities.

Although the regulation does not specify a frequency, periodic testing is recommended to ensure the correct functioning of the system.
